A First Experience To An European Convention

A Rising Voice for Renewable Energy at the World Recycling Convention

I am Kieran Ganga, a  youth advocate for renewable energy from Trinidad and Tobago. I hold a MSc in Renewable Energy where I delved into many forms of green energy, such as wind, solar and bioenergy. However, my passion and primary focus lie in Solar Photovoltaics (Solar PV). I am currently pursuing project management, which I believe is a key asset in advancing my field of study and my overall goal is to optimize the utilization of PV cells by harmonizing the academic research with the economic considerations that exist.

In the pursuit of my overarching goal, I applied for my first conference experience at the World Recycling Convention. I believed it was crucial to gain exposure to the extensive knowledge and experience the world has to offer in my field. In the process of completing this application, my initial thoughts on what would be discussed at the convention had changed after seeing the presentation categories, however this sparked my interests even more as I saw topics that I could relate to and several that I had never considered previously. In essence, by simply applying for this convention, I triggered a growth within myself by taking an open-minded approach.

I am pleased to announce that I was selected as a delegate, along with two other Trinidad and Tobago nationals, Khadija Stewart and Kneyone Murray. Together we had the honor of attending the World Recycling Convention in Madrid from October 23rd to 25th 2023. I would like to  extend my heartfelt appreciation to EcoVybz Environmental Creatives and Sustainable Ocean Alliance for supporting my journey as a budding advocate for renewable energy. As a first-time traveller to Europe, the logistical challenges of arranging accommodation, transportation, and meals  seemed overwhelming as I anxiously prepared for my presentation. This would be my first major presentation since my thesis on topics I held close to my heart. Thankfully, with the assistance of EcoVybz Environmental Creatives, I was able to fully focus on delivering my presentation and sharing insights I wished to convey at the convention.

World Recycling Convention Insights: Key Takeaways

The convention was an enlightening experience, showcasing a global commitment to sustainability practices. It incorporated a diverse range of speakers, representing different geographic locations and addressing critical issues specific to their communities. A standout feature was the recognition of unity in sustainable solutions by various sectors, such as academia and the private sector. Though we are separated by different regions and cultures, it was enlightening to see professionals keeping an open mind to the challenges faced by different organizations in their pursuit of advancements.

The emphasis on utilizing research to address local challenges was evident, with each participant striving to make a tangible impact in their home country or town. A wide range of topics were explored which included challenges faced in recycling, technology and innovation, plastic recycling technology, renewable resources, and climate change. Having listened to these presentations, it was evident how research provides endless possibilities of solutions which can benefit and be adopted by several communities. One key takeaway that stood out to me was that each member tackled an aspect of climate change whether directly or indirectly. Some may have focused primarily on reducing carbon emissions, whereas others focused on enhancing processes, such as improving plastic recycling methods for greater efficiency.  The diversity of speakers not only enriched the discussions but also underscored the interconnection of global environmental issues, with similar research topics being explored, creating a collaborative atmosphere where collective efforts could be expanded on.

The convention’s open environment facilitated rich networking experiences, with numerous opportunities for interaction during coffee breaks. As one of the youngest speakers, the support and respect received were genuinely inspiring. The willingness of participants to engage in meaningful discussions, share insights, and explore collaborative possibilities created a platform for exchanging ideas and methods that could benefit diverse projects. As a speaker representing Trinidad and Tobago, and the broader Caribbean region, it was encouraging to see my research on Solar PV resonate with several members of the diverse panel. In addition, witnessing the interest and commitment of individuals to contribute to research and initiatives in the region was a definite plus.

As a newcomer, the convention provided invaluable insights into ongoing work in the fields of recycling, renewable energy, technology and innovation. The revelations from Steve Whettingsteel, CEO of Krysteline Technologies, about the realities of glass recycling were eye-opening. Understanding that not all glass is recyclable, and the intricate details of the recycling process challenged preconceived notions. Additionally, discovering the similarities in recycling and carbon emission reduction challenges faced by different countries, irrespective of their geographic locations, emphasized the universal nature of environmental issues.

One of the highlights of the convention was presenting my work for the first time on an international stage. It was a moment of immense pride and overwhelming excitement, knowing that my contribution was being acknowledged on a global platform. My research “Powering the waves: Harnessing solar energy for Maritime Industries” was well received by the attendees. It was a huge motivational factor to have a captivated audience where I could share the current status of the energy transition and the challenges that the Caribbean faces. One of my key takeaways from this experience is the differences in how solar energy is treated across various regions. For example, as an advocate for PV cells in the Caribbean, the advantages of solar energy are endless due to the abundance and reliability of solar energy, however, regions that are more susceptible to changes in weather conditions are forced to focus on the reliability of this technology. From further discussions, it was highlighted that the lifespan of these PV cells is one of the main contributors when employed on large scale projects. In addition, the recycling procedure of decommissioned cells emerged as a barrier for the technology in European countries. With my input on these topics, I was granted the opportunity by Mr. Wettingsteel to collaborate with him on future PV related projects. I considered this one of the greatest highlights of my journey, as being granted opportunities in addition to my research being respected and appreciated by others was more than I had envisioned. Though the future is full of uncertainties, my experience with sharing my knowledge on a global platform contributed to my self-growth and development. Furthermore, the discussions had triggered room for improvement in my work.

From Professional Growth to Cultural Delights: A Journey Through Spain

However, it wasn’t just the professional aspects that made the experience memorable. As a first-time visitor to Europe, I was enthralled by the vibrant culture and breathtaking architecture of Madrid. The bustling streets, adorned with historical landmarks, provided a backdrop of wonder and exploration. And of course, no trip to Spain would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. While some dishes were appreciated for their unique flavors, others were an acquired taste. As a football fanatic it was quite the experience to be in the heart of Spanish football, with my visit to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the home of Real Madrid. Seeing such a historic football stadium, which boasts numerous European titles, added to the memorable experience of Spain. Although I had hoped to take a tour of the stadium or attend a professional match, the stadium was closed due to construction during my visit. I look forward to fulfilling these desires in the near future as witnessing such a spectacular venue up close and in person has only fueled my passions and dreams.

Madrid was not the end to my adventure as I also had the opportunity to visit Barcelona, a city I personally found more captivating. The architecture enthralled me as I explored the sites the city had to offer. Park Güell stands out as a favorite attraction, offering ever-changing landscapes that seem to transform with every turn. This visit was a sensational experience and my excitement escalated seeing the La Sagrada Familia. My trip to Spain shifted from a professional setting to one of a tourist in a matter of moments. At the time, it was impossible to fully grasp the breadth of experiences I had, however, in retrospect, it was such an amazing exposure to Spain that left me wanting more.

I would once again like to express my sincere gratitude to EcoVybz and Sustainable Ocean Alliance for the opportunity to attend this transformative event. I look forward to continued collaboration in the future as we strive towards a more sustainable and interconnected world.
